We have all experienced walking into a house and immediately feeling extremely comfortable and at ease. One feels completely relaxed upon entering a house and just feels at home. In some ways, this quality may seem intangible because some places seem to have it, and others simply do not. For most Americans, achieving this perfect sense of comfort and ease when designing a home may become their end goal.

You do not achieve the feeling of relaxation by chance or even by luck alone. It takes a lot of thought and design, based on human psychology. In order to build a comfortable home, it requires going beyond trends in design and into human emotions and senses.

By gaining a better understanding of these concepts, anyone can achieve a truly relaxing environment in their house. Combining human psychology with the science of creating comfortable designs allows for creating such a comfortable home.

Science of Comfort

Our environment has a significant impact on how we perceive our surroundings. The science of comfort is concerned with human psychology when it comes to perception. When we talk about comfort, it simply means our brain perceives the place as being safe and warm. In order to make us feel safe and comfortable, a series of factors come into play, including lighting, colors, acoustics, and texture.

The evolutionary psychology of man teaches us that we prefer environments that are able to let us feel relaxed while still feeling safe. Our brain is trained to respond positively to soft lighting, while harsh lighting and shadows make our brains subconsciously alert us. Similarly, room acoustics have a hidden effect. Echoes tend to make us feel that we are in an impersonal commercial environment, while rooms that do not echo provide feelings of intimacy. This way, by altering sensory input, one can easily dictate the emotional response.

Designing Comfortable Homes

In order to apply the science of comfort to building homes, several essential concepts should be taken into account. By applying these, one bridges the gap between looking good and feeling good.

Materials and Warmth

Choosing appropriate materials for the interior has a big impact on the perceived comfort. Although glossy hard surfaces look nice, they do not make rooms feel comfortable. Instead, one can introduce various materials with different texture in order to soften the interior. Various knitted materials, cushions made from linen, and wooden furniture help one soften the interior.

Lighting plays an important role in providing warmth. In order to ensure that the interior remains welcoming, one can opt for using warm-toned lights and various sources of light. Using floor lamps instead of ceiling lights provides warmer lighting. In particular, adding table lamps and floor lamps allows one to soften larger spaces.

Layout

How a person navigates the room affects the overall perception of a comfortable interior, and professionals like SPRUCED focus on this aspect. Clutter and poor layout force the brain to continuously calculate obstacles, causing additional stress for the person. Most modern American homes are designed according to open floor plan, which means that it becomes crucial to create separate zones within the house.

Furniture needs to be arranged so that conversations would flow smoothly and movement would be comfortable. Giving furniture adequate space improves overall perception. Moreover, ergonomics plays an extremely important role when designing an interior. The scale of tables, couches, chairs, and other elements should fit the room and the users.

Personalization

Although a perfect design makes the space very appealing, it lacks something if it does not reflect personality. Personalizing the home creates a perfect comfortable interior. Personal touches include displays of items that have some history behind them.

Displaying family photos, souvenirs brought from trips, or inherited furniture gives meaning to the interior. Such objects act as anchors that allow individuals to see their unique story when they step foot into their home.

With these key concepts, one can easily design a comfortable home that feels like their own sanctuary. There is no need to have huge budgets or renovate the entire home to make it comfortable. One can start small by changing the lighting in one’s living areas and rearranging furniture to improve the flow. Adding texture and displaying personal items brings comfort.
